Cains Brewery Protest

38 workers made redundant by the brewery stage a protest over their treatment. Apparently they were forced to close due to a drop in orders from supermarkets and "deeply regret" the job losses. However, this hasn't stopped them in going ahead with plans to spend £50m on a 'Brewery Village' to turn the site into a tourist attraction. The irony is that this development could create up to 800 jobs! What do you think about these plans? Maybe these ex-employees could be given a place in the 'Village'?

Need a beer opening?

A slightly different flavour on this next beer related video, in a change from bar tricks, we thought we'd show you some insane (and some stupid) ways to open your beer. Please excuse the terrible music and incredibly American style video but some of these open-ings really are quite epic!

(But please don't try these at home).

Great Yarmouth Lacons Brewery revives historic ales

A 'sleeping yeast' has been woken after more than 50 years in order to make these historic ales in Great Yarmouth. The brewery closed down in 1968 after having been there for over 200 years! Luckily the yeast had been held in a deep freeze at the National Collection of Yeast Cultures until now. Lets hope we can try some and get them up on the leader board!

Did you know? #14

Some of the earliest known writings refer to the production of beer. In fact there was a hymn prayer to the Mesopotamian goddess of beer, Ninkasi, which was also used to remember the recipe in a mostly illiterate culture!

Frederic's Ginger Beer

Another ginger beer enters the leader board now in 16th place. This time GB Frederic's Great British Alc. Ginger Beer, missing out on a top ten spot by a few points... However, a really nice beer and not too overpowering on the ginger front; would go well at any summer picnic/BBQ event.

Both teams had to create a new tasting beer, some more successful than others. Shame we wont be able to try them and see where they'd have placed on the leader board.

Reading Beer Festival: Campaigners Fight for British Pubs

Campaigners at the Reading Beer Festival say that pub companies are causing local, privately owned pubs to be forced out of business through high beer prices. However, pub companies claim they aid landlords.
In this BBC report they bring up the issue of the economy and how the number of jobs in these companies benefits Britain, but is the economy just a handy tool to say "let us continue to make money, whatever the cost"?
